Abstract
Using Noguchi's modification of McKenzie's method for the bio-assay of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), an attempt was made to measure TSH in the serum of 130 persons with thyroid disease and 11 normal subjects. A long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) was found in 54 of 95 patients with hyperthyroidism. A particularly high incidence of LATS (17 of 25) was found in hyperthyroid patients prior to therapy. The level of LATS in serum from patients with hyperthyroidism showed a tendency to decrease after treatment by antithyroid medication or thyroidectomy. The effect of thyroidectomy on the level of LATS was investigated in 35 hyperthyroid patients, but no significant change was found at 24 hr after operation. In 5 patients a comparison of the LATS levels in the thyroid arterial and venous blood revealed no detectable arteriovenous difference. The thyroid was examined histologically in 61 hyperthyroid patients. The degree of epithelial proliferation of the thyroid follicles showed fairly good correlation with the level of LATS.Keywords
