Abstract
The deduction of the energy-momentum tensor from a variational principle is clarified in the field-theoretic approach starting from the unrenormalized flat space-time. The procedure is applied to coupled gravitational and electromagnetic fields obtaining the relavant, total energy-momentum tensor to second order in the gravitational coupling constant .
