Hypothalamic hyperphagia in the monkey.

Abstract
The behavioral effects of lesions in the region of the ventro-medial nuclei of the hypothalamus were studied in 7 monkeys. These Ss along with unoperated controls were utilized in various tests investigating parameters of food intake and weight gain; observations were made on the effects of the lesions on dominance behavior, bar pressing for food, and rejection of quinine-adulterated food. Certain similarities and differences between rats with such lesions and monkeys of the present study were discussed. In general, the hyperphagia and obesity of rats following ventromedial hypothalamic lesions is paralleled in the monkey. Unlike rats, our operated Ss appeared more motivated for food in situations where resistance must be overcome to obtain it.
