ALKALOSIS DUE TO MECHANICAL HYPERVENTILATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HYPERCAPNIA

Abstract
Signs of central nervous system dysfunction developed in 3 patients with advanced chronic obstructive airway disease and hypercapnia during brief periods of elevated pH. Overly vigorous therapy for respiratory failure with automatically cycled IPPB [intermittent positive pressure breathing] was responsible as the patients'' elevated pH and neurologic signs subsided when ventilation was decreased.
