Epidemiological Studies on Cerebrovascular Diseases in Hisayama, Kyushu Island, Japan

Abstract
Epidemiological studies particularly concerned with cardiovascular diseases have been carried out in a selected community of Kyushu Island, Japan, called Hisayama. Of 1,841 residents in this community aged over 40, 1,658 (90.1%) were examined (blood pressure, electrocardiogram, ocular fundi, total cholesterol in the serum, urinalysis for protein and sugar, and examination of physical and neurological status. The results obtained for each test are presented. In a follow-up study of 18 months duration from Nov. 1961 to April 1963, 63 out of 1,658 subjects (3.2%) moved out of the town and 56 (3.0%) died. The outcome (0.2%) was not known. Among 56 death cases, 17 (30.4%) underwent postmortem examinations. In 39 cases diagnosis was made based upon the clinical findings. Cause of death was determined as followed cerebrovascular diseases, 19 cases (33.9%); heart diseases, 9 cases (16.1%); malignancies, 6 cases (10.7%); others, 17 cases (31.4%); and causes undetermined, 5 cases (9.0%).
