Abstract
Research lies at the root of good public health practice. Several categories of research are particularly suitable for the local health officer. Description and examples are given of several such projects in evaluation research, operations research, research in program development, fiscal research, "yardstick" research and epidemiologic research. The New York City Health Department is now undertaking research projects, 30 during the past year, in cooperation with each of the 6 local medical schools and the school of public health. Each of its high-level employees is engaged in research and devotes time to the improvement of research efforts of others. During the coming years, the health officer must look to research and the emphasis upon research technics as his major source of stability, communication and cooperation. Through these he can maintain his enlightened leadership in developing future effective programs for the community''s health.
