Abstract
I. A. Richards criticized the centrality of persuasion in traditional rhetoric and developed a new philsophy of rhetoric with communication of meaning at its core. This article examines his philosophy of rhetoric in light of his communication diagrams and then suggests some implications for the rhetorical theorist, critic, and instructor. Keywords
