Abstract
6 groups of rats (N = 44) were avoidance trained with 3 different intertrial intervals (ITIs) either in a conventional homogeneous shuttle box (all black or all white) or in a heterogeneous shuttle box (1 chamber white and the other black). The heterogeneous shuttle box retarded learning significantly, but the ITI had no significant effect. The results were interpreted as indicating that place cues are irrelevant in shuttle avoidance.
