Abstract
Washed carrot slices take up more K than Na during accumulation of C1 salts from a mixed salt solution. Ouabain does not affect the overall influx of labelled K or Na to the vacuole, but inhibits the efflux of labelled Na from the vacuole. The simplest hypothesis is the ouabain inhibits a Na efflux pump at the plasmalemma. Some suggestions to explain the transient changes in Na efflux after the addition of ouabain are put forward.
