Abstract
A model for leaf photosynthesis by C3 plant species is used to examine the inter-relations between carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations, and dark respiration rates at the leaf compensation point. The model is applied to data published on a range of C3 plant types. These data indicate a remarkable constancy in the slope of linear relationship between the CO2 and O2 concentrations at the leaf compensation point, indicating a constancy in the ratio of photorespiration to photosynthesis across C3 plant types. The model is extended to deal with C4 plants and used to interpret the differences in the compensation point relationships of C3 and C4 plants. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
