Abstract
Contrary to the inability to use the effective-mass approximation (EMA) for infinite crystals, two criteria are obtained for the validity of the EMA for finite crystals. The first restricts the potential drop across the crystal to be less than the band gap, and the second restricts the "empty-lattice" energy level to be smaller than the free-electron kinetic energy. Keywords
