Fate of Intraperitoneally Administered Colchicine in the Golden Hamster

Abstract
Colchiclne was determined in the urine and in the gastrointestinal tract including contents 2 hours after intraperitoneal administration to male Golden Hamsters. Urinary excretion showed no statistically significant differences between the groups receiving 400, 200, or 100 mg/kg of bodyweight of colchicine. The groups receiving doses of 470 or 800 mg/kg of bodyweight showed diminished urinary excretion. No differences were shown in the colchicine content of the gastrointestinal tract including contents. The hypothesis is made that doses of 470 mg/kg (LD50) and above interfere with urinary excretion through toxic action on the kidney.
