Activities of Beef Calves Reared in Confinement

Abstract
Activity patterns of confined beef calves were studied for 24-hr, intervals once a month for 5 months. Three different calves were observed each month. Calves were maintained in six groups of seven head each and observed for frequency of defecation and urination, distance walked and minutes devoted to standing, lying, eating, nursing, ruminating and drinking. All criteria measured differed significantly between day and night observations. Level of feed intake of dam did not significantly influence calf behavior. Distance walked each day was about two-thirds the distance recorded for their confined dams. These confined calves did not establish a social rank up through 325 days of age. Copyright © 1970.
