Abstract
This article examines the relationship between population and the location of major corporate headquarters in U. S metropolitan areas from 1960 to 1980 within the context of the Semple-Phipps model of the spatial evolution of corporate power. The hypothesis that there has been increasing divergence between metropolitan population and corporate hierarchies from 1960 to 1980 is substantiated. The findings, consistent with the Semple-Phipps model, emphasize the changing relationships between metropolitan population and corporate growth.
