The concepts of empowerment and care of the hospice patient and family

Abstract
The concept of empowerment in the health care setting is gaining increased momentum. Its application here to hospice home care is particularly unique and powerful as well as fascinating. The author provides a basic framework from which to understand the concept of empowerment, then builds on this, providing applications of the concept to the clinical setting. This is not a philosophic and theoretic discussion regarding empowerment. This article is purposely positioned early in this issue to provide the reader with this vital information, as it affects the entire issue.
