Abstract
Upper and lower bounds are obtained for the potential energy of two-dimensional classical systems consisting of particles interacting via a short-range potential that has a hard-disk core. The bounds coincide in the close-packing limit, implying that first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory becomes exact in this limit. Keywords
