An Analysis of the Abrasive Machining of Plane Surfaces

Abstract
The grinding ratio (ratio of volume of work removed to volume of wheel consumed) is found to be related to feed rate by an equation which resembles the Taylor tool life equation for single point tools. An economic analysis of the abrasive machining of plane surfaces is presented with special charts to enable the cost optimum feed rate to be easily determined in practice. The results of the analysis are used to consider the additional grinding wheel cost that is justified for a given improvement in grinding performance.
