Abstract
Following pollination or induction of parthenocarpy by NAA1 treatment watermelon ovaries synthesize large quantities of RNA. Hormone-treated ovaries increase their rate of RNA synthesis over untreated controls by 6 h after treatment whereas pollinated ovaries do so by 24 h. The lag period with pollinated ovaries has been related to the growth of pollen tubes toward the ovules and it is suggested that auxin secretion by the growing pollen tubes may be the stimulus for increased RNA synthesis. Evidence is presented that the cells in the flesh of developing ovaries become polyploid as they enlarge. Keywords
