Abstract
Patients (17) with pustular psoriasis, i.e., 9 generalized and 8 localized types, were treated orally with the new aromatic retinoid RO 10-9359 [ethyl-all-trans-9-(4-methoxy-2,3,6-trimethylphenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoate]. The given dose was 0.5-1.0 mg/kg body wt per day. After 4-8 wk the result was very good or good in 13 cases. Side effects were moderate; only in 1 female patient was the oral treatment interrupted because of drug-induced alopecia. Histologic examinations revealed spongiform pustules before treatment and typical features of psoriasis vulgaris after 2 wk; after 4 wk most tissue changes had returned to normal. An unusual, fine, granular, mucoid material was seen under the EM in the intercellular spaces of the epidermis, being most likely produced in the keratinocytes.
