Physical Activity and 10-Year Mortality From Cardiovascular Diseases and All Causes

Abstract
IN DEVELOPED countries, 80% of all deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) occur in people aged 65 years and older.1 Both coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke are major causes of death and disability among the elderly. In middle-aged people, physical activity is inversely associated with CHD.2,3 Decreased levels of physical activity may therefore be associated with increased cardiovascular risk in the elderly. However, in contrast to several consistent reports4-9 about an inverse association between physical activity and all-cause mortality among elderly people, limited data are available for risk of specific diseases, such as CVDs.
