Linoleic and Linolenic Acids: Their Oxidation by Normal and Diabetic Rats

Abstract
Oxidation of linoleic and linolenic acids, both randomly labeled with C14, to CO2 was compared in (1) fasted and glucose-fed normal rats; (2) normal and diabetic ab lib fed rats; and (3) insulin-treated and untreated, ad lib fed diabetic rats. Administration of glucose spared oxidation of both linoleic and linolenic acids. Oxidation of linoleic acid by diabetic rats exceeded that by similarly fed normal rats. Insulin spared oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diabetic rat.
