The electro-optic properties of ferroelectric KSN crystals

Abstract
The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of single crystals from the Potassium Strontium Niobate (KSN) system are related to the behaviour of the electro-optic half-wave voltage, Vλ/2 under various experimental conditions. A relation is used in which Vλ/2 is inversely proportional to the polar dielectric constant, e'c , and to the spontaneous polarization, Ps . Temperature and composition variations of 2 are discussed in the light of the known behaviour of Ec and Ps . The half-wave voltage is found to reach a minimum of 90 V at about 80°C, a value which is attractively low for device use.
