Abstract
The original version of this article was given as a paper at a seminar celebrating the centenary, in March 1995, of the death of Dr R W Dale of Birmingham. It surveys the changing relationship between policy makers and those involved professionally in religious education in England over the past decade and argues for a new emphasis on co‐operation to ensure that religious education contributes effectively to the spiritual development of pupils.
