Mycoparasitism by Basidiomycetes in Culture

Abstract
Fifteen species of wood-rotting basldiomycetes were found to be necrotrophic mycoparasites in culture on Ceratocystis fimbriata and C. fagacearum and a few other fungi. The degree of destruction varied from mild to severe and was affected by the concentration of nutrients. Spores or vegetative cells of hosts were killed following contact by the parasite. No penetration of living cells was observed, but penetration of killed cells sometimes occurred. The mode of parasitism was similar to that previously reported for nectrotrophic mycoparasltes in other groups of fungi. It is proposed that the ability of the wood-rotting basidiomycetes to parasitize other fungi may aid in colinization of freshly cut stumps or logs.
