Abstract
A phase diagram of the Sn-Te system above 760°C is investigated by using thermal analysis and a controlled solidification technique. Stannous telluride contains 50.94 at.% Te, which correspond to SnTe1.038, at the melting point 804°C and forms no extended solid solutions with Sn or Te above 780°C. The deviation from the stoichiometric composition SnTe is of the same order as is estimated from the Hall coefficient. This non-stoichiometry may be responsible for the semi-metallic behaviours. Keywords
