Measurements of cross sections for the fusion-evaporation reactionsPu244(Ca48,xn)292x114andCm245(Ca48,xn)293x116

Abstract
We have studied the excitation functions of the reactions Pu244(Ca48,xn). Maximum cross sections for the evaporation of 3–5 neutrons in the complete-fusion reaction Pu+244Ca48 were measured to be σ3n=2pb, σ4n=5pb, and σ5n=1pb. The decay properties of 3n-evaporation product 128914, in the decay chains observed at low Ca48 energy coincide well with those previously observed in the Pu+244Ca48 and Cm+248Ca48 reactions and assigned to 128814. Two isotopes of element 114 and their descendant nuclei were identified for the first time at higher bombarding energies: 128814 (Eα=9.95MeV, T12=0.6s) and 128714 (Eα=10.04MeV, T12=1s). We also report on the observation of new isotopes of element 116, 1290,29116, produced in the Cm245+Ca48 reaction with cross sections of about 1pb. A discussion of self-consistent interpretations of all observed decay chains originating at Z=118, 116, and 114 is presented.
