Abstract
The association reactions of C+ ions with H2 and D2 molecules have been investigated using drift tube–mass spectrometer techniques. It is found that at H2 or D2 densities of ∼1×1016 cm−3 the reactions proceed by three‐body association, with rate coefficients of (3±0.3)×10−29 cm6/s at 300 K and (6±0.6)×10−29 cm6/s at 78 K for H2, with slightly larger values for D2. The measurements also place an upper limit of k≲2×10−14 cm3/s at 300 K for the rate coefficient for radiative association C++H2→CH2++hν, a process thought to constitute an important step in the formation of molecules in interstellar gas clouds. Keywords
