Distribution of 250 Cases of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) according to the FAB Classification and Response to Therapy

Abstract
A total of 250 consecutive [human] cases of AML [acute myeloid leukemia] in adults were diagnosed over 6 yr. Pretreatment blood and bone marrow smears and cytochemical markers were taken into account. All cases were reviewed by 3 different observers and classified according to the FAB [French, American and British Cooperative Group] criteria. The final diagnosis resulted from agreement of at least 2 observers. Some discrepancies occurred in the classification and are discussed. The prognostic implication of AML subclassification was assessed as the percentage of complete remission in 100 cases.
