A probabilistic analysis of the relationships among belief and attitudes.

Abstract
Outlines an approach to the analysis of inference and classification processes, based on the assumption that subjective probabilities are related according to the laws of objective probability, and suggests certain of its implications for the study of relationships among attitudes and beliefs. Some preliminary empirical support for the formulation is reported. The consistency theories proposed by W. McGuire, by F. Heider, and by R. Abelson and M. Rosenberg (see33:3) are compared to the formulation proposed, and possible differences in their assumptions and implications are identified. Implications of the proposed formulation for impression-formation processes are discussed. (24 ref.)
