Effect of Insulin on the Hexosamine Content of Alloxan Diabetic Rabbit Vitreous Humor

Abstract
The glucosamine concentration of rabbit vitreous humor is significantly elevated in the alloxan diabetic state. The glucosamine concentration is significantly lowered, towards normal values, when exogenous insulin is administered to such animals. These findings are most readily explained on the basis that in insulin deficient states glucose is preferentially utilized in the synthesis of glucosamine.
