Abstract
We have characterized a circulating inhibitor ofFSH receptor binding found in two patients with hypergonadotropicamenorrhea and myasthenia gravis. The inhibitor behavesas an immunoglobulin according to several criteria, includingprecipitation by 30%X ammonium sulfate, migration on DEAEcellulosechromatography, specific binding to protein A-Sepharose,characterization as a 7S protein in sucrose density gradients, and immunoprecipitation with specific antihuman immunoglobulinG. Evidence suggests that these antibodies aredirected at determinants on or near the FSH receptor, and theymay be responsible for the observed clinical FSH resistance.
