Roe Deer and Methods of Control in the Forests of South Scotland

Abstract
The distribution and increasing numbers of roe deer in the forests of south Scotland with consequent problems in the regeneration of older or uneconomic woods are discussed. Types of damage and the failure of earlier methods of protection and control are mentioned. Details of two comparative studies on roe deer populations with descriptions of their habits and seasonal behaviour provide the basis on which an effective system of control has been developed. The importance of training for deerstalkers and the use of the right equipment are stressed.
