AROMATIC BIOSYNTHESIS VII

Abstract
Certain multiple aromatic auxotrophs of Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Aerobacter accumulate 2 shikimic acid derivatives, compounds Z1 and Z2, which are inactive as growth factors. On heating with acid these compounds are converted to shikimic acid, which is readily assayed. Compounds Zl and Z2 can be distinguished from each other by differences in acid stability and chromato-graphic mobility. The accumulation patterns of various mutants show that compound Zl arises at a later stage of biosynthesis than Z2. Compound Z2 has been shown to be a phosphate ester of shikimic acid (Weiss et al.), and hence seems likely to be a normal intermediate despite its nutritional inactivity.
