INFLUENCE OF FEEDING ON CERTAIN ACIDS IN FECES OF INFANTS

Abstract
In previous communications,1 we compared the volatile acid output of infants fed on breast milk with the output of those fed on diluted cow's milk plus lactose. It was found that the volatile acid output and the total titratable acidity were relatively constant when breast milk was employed and were extremely variable on the diluted cow's milk mixtures. Changing the diet had no great influence on the total quantity of acid excreted. A change from breast milk to cow's milk invariably caused the appearance of propionic acid in the stool. We showed that many factors other than diet influenced the number of stools and the excretion of acid. The present study deals with the comparison of the acid output of infants on breast milk with that of infants on whole cow's milk.
