Ultrasonic method for shear strength prediction of spot welds

Abstract
A novel ultrasonic method was developed to evaluate shear strength of a spot weld. This method is based on an analytical expression relating the transmission coefficient of Lamb waves passing through an aperture in solid plates to the aperture size. Simultaneously, a fracture mechanics model was introduced to correlate fracture load to the dimension of a spot weld. Consequently, the ultrasonic Lamb wave transmission coefficient was measured through spot welds and related to fracture load. There is good agreement between experimental results and model predictions. It appears that ultrasonic waves can be used to estimate shear strengths of spot welds.
