Abstract
Helcion pellucidus is one of the few prosobranchs adapted to a life on kelp, which is both the limpet's food and habitat. Despite morphological and behavioural adaptions to the current regime around the kelp, the limpet is occasionally dislodged in rough weather. When dislodged, however, H. pellucidus quickly produces abundant mucus which forms a sticky ‘sail’ giving the limpet a nearly neutral boyancy and enables the snail rapidly to recolonize its habitat.
