Abstract
We present a detailed calculation of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of Na. The calculation follows a theory by Mahan, which allows for the inclusion of various bulk and surface effects. We find it important to take into account various broadening effects in order to explain the anomalous structure at , which was found by Jensen and Plummer in the spectra of Na. The broadening effects also help to resolve the discrepancy of the conduction-band width. Efforts are made to compare our results with new measurements of Plummer and Lyo. We discuss the ambiguity concerning the sign of the crystal potential and comment on charge-density waves in the systems. We have also generalized our discussions to other simple metals like K.
