Abstract
Mississippi is one of eight states without any form of legislation restricting tobacco use in public places or work sites. In a telephone survey of 1,210 Mississippi adults, 95 percent of respondents, including 90 percent of current smokers, were in favor of prohibiting or restricting smoking in public areas and 91 percent of respondents, including 81 percent of current smokers, were in favor of smoking restrictions at work sites. Mississippi needs to undertake public health initiatives to promote the rights of nonsmokers and reduce the adverse health effects to nonsmokers of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in public places and work sites. Keywords
