Abstract
Blood volume flow and its phasic changes were directly measured with a new compact, low resistance, high fidelity flowmeter in which a fine bristle is deviated by the blood stream. The deviation is recorded by at- taching the bristle to an RCA 5734 subminiature electromechanical transducer vacuum tube which actuates an oscillograph. With this flowmeter the active influence of ventricular contraction on venous return is demonstrated by an acceleration of superior vena cava flow and a marked increase of inflow into the right atrium during ventricular systole when the tricuspid valves remain closed. Keywords
