Abstract
The origin and evolution of coxal cavities are discussed. Each major type occurring in the Adephaga is described and illustrated, and its distribution within the suborder is listed. Because of extensive parallel and convergent evolution, no classification can be based on the variations of the coxal cavities of a single thoracic segment, as has been attempted in the past; but when used in combination with other characters, the coxal cavities do offer evidence about phylogeny. A natural classification is proposed. Jeannel's Isochaeta and Anisochaeta are accepted as the primary subdivisions of the Adephaga. The Isochaeta are subdivided into Septisternia and Glabricornia; the Anisochaeta, into Isopleuri, Hemipleuri, and Lobopleuri. A few genera do not fit into this classification, and are discussed separately.
