Abstract
Summary: : The paradoxical survival of the mammalian fetus as an allograft provides a useful experimental model in immunology. In human pregnancy, studies of the placental transmission of serological and clinical manifestations of maternal auto‐immune diseases have resulted in important discoveries concerning the aetiology and pathogenesis of these conditions. These studies are reviewed with particular reference to thyrotoxicosis, myasthenia gravis, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma and pernicious anaemia.
