Abstract
It is argued that Caroline Gipps' article in the previous issue of the British Educational Research Journal (1992) takes too fragmented and technical a view of the role of research and its relationship to policy. Specific points of disagreement are identified and the case for a more integrated approach to research in assessment is outlined.Keywords
