Abstract
A baseline study of seabed sediments in the vicinity of Tromsøflaket, off northern Norway around the position 71°26′ Nand 17°56′ E yielded 14 specimens of a ‘pharetronid’ sponge, which is here ascribed to a new species, Plectroninia norvegica. Its habitat, a sedimentary surface with a very rich sessile epifauna at a depth of 280 m and temperature of about 6° C, is in marked contrast to the previous known distribution of the genus in cryptic habitats in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean. Keywords
