Abstract
Summary Arrested development of the first inflorescence of glasshouse tomatoes occurred in plants sown in November but not on plants sown in December, some varieties being more susceptible than others. It was counteracted by CO2 enrichment and by delaying planting from pots into the glasshouse border; in some varieties only one of these treatments was required. Irrespective of variety, in a CO2-enriched atmosphere it was unnecessary to delay planting beyond the “buds visible” stage to preserve the first inflorescence. A shortage of assimilates is postulated as the cause of arrested development. Keywords
