Direct Measurement of Arterial Blood Pressure in the Guinea Pig

Abstract
A Statham P-23D pressure transducer and Sanborn amplifying and recording system were used to measure end pressures directly from the carotid artery in 8 guinea pigs under local or general anesthesia. Systolic and diastolic pressures averaged 77 and 47 mm Hg, respectively, and the calculated mean pressure averaged 57 mm Hg. The portion of the cardiac cycle taken up by systole was greater than that described for other small mammals in about 40% of the measurements.
