Abstract
Medicine needs to update its ideas about the sexuality of mentally retarded persons. It is time to recognize the feasibility of contraception for many of them. Sterilization should remain as an alternative means of reproductive control, but many retardates appear to be able to understand the use of contraception and practice it with or without supervision. Keywords
