Abstract
In an interview study of a 1.3% sample of the retired population of San Antonio, it was clear that for the two-thirds of retired people who did not drive being taken in automobiles as passengers was the only way to reach many places. Despite other drawbacks, the greatest problem by far was the inadequacy of opportunities for rides. Retired people need flexible transportation which picks them up at home, takes them to the destinations of their need, and home again. This transportation should be offered by public or private agencies to supplement what families and friends are able to do at a price suitable to retirement incomes.
