Cytology and Crossing Behavior of a Haploid Alfalfa Plant1

Abstract
Synopsis: In a haploid alfalfa plant arising from the California common variety meiosis was essentially regular with bivalent formation predominating. One quadrivalent appeared arising from a reciprocal translocation. Reduced gametes were rarely functional. Polyploid gametes were viable and appeared with relatively high frequency. The good pairing at metaphase would indicate that common alfalfa is essentially an autotetraploid.
