Abstract
AMPLISIPHONIA pacifica is close to Placophora in vegetative structure. The dorsiventrally expanded membranous thallus grows as a result of the activity of a marginal row of cells, which give rise to forking rows of cells which are laterally united and which function as central cells, each cutting off 3 pericentral cells above and 2 below as in Placophora. The genus differs from Placophora in size and habit, but chiefly in the fact that the tetrasporangia are borne in modified lobes of the thallus. These lobes lack dorsiventrality, 3 pericentral cells being cut off above and 3 below each central cell. The plant is frequent in southern California and extends north at least to the Monterey region. Sexual plants are unknown.
