STUDIES OF PRIMARY MALIGNANT TUMORS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE

Abstract
The clinicopathological features of forty-seven primary malignant tumors of the small intestine were studied. The incidence of malignant tumors of the small intestine was 0.45% of all malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. There were 20 cases of cancer, 14 cases of leiomyosarcoma, 12 cases of malignant lymphma, and one case of carcinoid. Cancers and leiomyosarcomas were more common in the proximal intestine, and malignant lymphomas were mainly located in the ileum end.Preoperative correct diagnosis rate was low (47.8%), especially in tumors of the jejunum. Most of malignant tumors of the small intestine were in an advanced stage. Fourteen cases (30%) in this series were nonradical resections and the 5 years survival rate was 34%.These results suggest that early diagnosis due to the progress of diagnostic technique may be essential for gaining better prognosis of malignant tumors of the small intestine.
